Tractor-trailer loaded with alcohol stolen

Associated Press – May 6, 2008 7:35 PM ET

CLAYTON, N.C. (AP) – Police in Clayton are looking for a half-million dollars worth of stolen liquor, but they’re not sure the thieves know what they took.

According to police, a tractor-trailer was reported stolen from a lot behind a Bojangles’ restaurant. Inside the trailer was an assortment of hard liquor.

Police Chief Glen B. Allen told The News & Observer of Raleigh that it’s unclear whether the thieves were after the rig, the alcohol – or both.

Police said the driver of the truck parked the truck behind Bojangles’ on Thursday night. When he returned Friday, it was gone. Allen wouldn’t identify the driver.

The truck was destined for Raleigh.

Police are seeking a 2006 Volvo tractor-trailer bearing a Cowan Systems company logo and Maine license plate number 0975737. More from WAVY-TV 10

Or maybe he was after the diesel fuel in the tank…..

Today, energy experts testified on Capitol Hill about how the price of fuel is taking profits away from truckers, even forcing some to lose their trucks.

Analysts say market uncertainty and high demand in developing countries are pushing energy prices through the roof. From CBN.com

Analysts predict oil to hit $200 before the year is over. It’s going to be a long year….

Fake documents swamp Houston

Illegal immigrants fearful of being caught in stepped-up workplace raids are fueling a growing market in Houston for phony immigration and work documents.

The result, experts say, is a glut of false, altered and counterfeit documents that are easily obtained at Houston-area flea markets, businesses and clandestine printing shops set up in homes and apartments. The bogus documents include counterfeit Texas driver’s licenses, fake Social Security and “green cards,” and even worthless international driver’s licenses sold here and in other states.

“You could put all of HPD full time on this thing, and I don’t think we could put a dent in it,” said Lt. Robert Sells, with the Texas Department of Public Safety’s driver’s license fraud unit. More from the Houston Chronicle

  • Don’t conduct financial transactions or use applications like e-mail and instant messaging.
  • Change the default setting on your laptop so you have to manually select the Wi-Fi network you’re connecting to.

Nothing To Offer, Nothing Left To Say

    JR Dieckmann

For the past 3 days I have been trying to come up with a topic to write about this week, but I keep coming up with the same answer – nothing. Which incidentally is pretty much the same answer Mrs. Clinton comes up with to most every question she’s asked in an interview.

For example, when she was asked today by ABC’s George Stephanopoulos how she would deal with the threat of Iran’s nuclear weapons, she said that we would have to sit down and come to an agreement with them, but then she said “we don’t even know who is running Iran.” Speak for yourself, Mrs. Clinton. And what could you possibly offer Iran to stop their nuclear weapons program? I can think of only one thing. If they agree to end their nuclear ambitions, we will agree not to turn their country into a glass parking lot. I don’t think that’s exactly what Mrs. Clinton has in mind, if anything. Read more »

‘Free Food’ Puts a Bad Taste in My Mouth

    Renee E. Taylor

When President Bush announced last week that he is calling on Congress for an additional $770 million in international “food aid,” I had just returned from a trip to the grocery store and was feeling less than charitable upon hearing that he wanted to give more aid to countries (such as the terrorist, America-hating states of Somalia and the Sudan) that we have been “feeding” for over 50 years. But fear not; Bush included needy Americans in his discussion:

“Here at home, we’re working to ensure that our poorest citizens get the food they need. Since 2001, the administration in working with Congress has increased funding for nutrition assistance programs by 76 percent. We’ve adjusted food stamp benefits annually to cover price increases at the checkout counter. And last month the Agriculture Department made available an additional $150 million to respond to the food needs of those who depend on WIC – the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. With this new funding, we will have increased our support for WIC by 18.6 percent this year.”

But what was missing from Bush’s speech was the toll that high fuel prices and food are taking on working Americans – those of us who are paying for this increase in foreign aid – aid that has done nothing in my lifetime but spawn more dependence on the government. This dependence has also spawned more crime and insolence by those wanting more under the guise of “entitlement.” More from FamilySecurityMatters
