Area emergency crews called to handle pair of hazmat incidents

Area hazmat crews put in double duty Wednesday night into Thursday afternoon, with a chemical spill at a Montgomery factory and a truck rollover about two miles away.

The spill occurred at a factory off Orchard Road late Wednesday night, while the truck crashed at Routes 31 and 30 about eight hours later.

A witness to the truck crash, 21-year-old Rogelio Salgado of Oswego, said he was waiting in a left-turn lane on Route 31 at about 7:15 a.m. Thursday when a truck exiting Route 30 tipped over and violently slammed onto the median behind him.  More from Suburban Chigago News

The article also reports that on “Wednesday night, 21 people were hospitalized and 45 others were treated on the scene after a chemical leak at a Montgomery trucking company.

Firefighters responded to a hazardous materials spill at Yellow Transportation, 2100 Rochester Drive, about 10:20 p.m. and found a chemical leaking from a 275-gallon plastic container, according to the Montgomery and Countryside Fire Protection District.”

Between 30 and 40 gallons of a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide leaked from the tank and reacted with materials in the area to produce fumes, firefighters said.
