Mexico has pretty much always been a rough-and-tumble place. In recent years, however, the security environment has deteriorated rapidly, and parts of the country have become incredibly violent. It is now common to see military weaponry such as fragmentation grenades and assault rifles used almost daily in attacks.
In fact, just last week we noted two separate strings of grenade attacks directed against police in Durango and Michoacan states. In the Michoacan incident, police in Uruapan and Lazaro Cardenas were targeted by three grenade attacks during a 12-hour period. Then on Feb. 17, a major firefight occurred just across the border from the United States in Reynosa, when Mexican authorities attempted to apprehend several armed men seen riding in a vehicle. The men fled to a nearby residence and engaged the pursuing police with gunfire, hand grenades and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). After the incident, in which five cartel gunmen were killed and several gunmen, cops, soldiers and civilians were wounded, authorities recovered a 60 mm mortar, five RPG rounds and two fragmentation grenades. BUFFALO, N. Y. — U. S. border agents at the Peace Bridge have seized $1 million in ecstasy hidden among bushels of blueberries in a transport truck bound for Florida.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers searched the truck Friday after it crossed the bridge to Buffalo.
During the course of an inspection, officers used gamma-ray technology to generate a high-resolution image of the truck’s contents, which revealed an anomaly in the roof of the truck’s sleeper cab.
Ten vacuum-sealed bags filled with 48,400 ecstasy tablets were found in the cab. “CBP’s non-intrusive inspection technology assists our officers in preventing terrorist weapons and contraband, including illegal drugs from entering our country while facilitating the orderly flow of legitimate trade and travel,” said James Engleman, CBP director of field operations in Buffalo.
Charged with importation and possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance is Leon Johnson, 41, of Brampton. From the St. Catherine’s Standard
EL PASO, Texas — Customs officers found 957 pounds of marijuana hidden in a truckload of concrete pipes.
The 1993 International tractor trailer from Mexico was X-rayed at the Bridge of the Americas on Friday. The examination revealed anomalies in the cargo that turned out to be 816 packages of the drug, U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Rick Lopez told the El Paso Times.
Officers cut through the concrete pipes to find the marijuana packages encased inside.
CBP officials put the drugs value at $765,000 and said the case was still under investigation. From Chron.com
NUEVO LAREDO, MEXICO — A bomb found on the Puerta a las Americas, one of the four international bridges linking this Mexican city to Laredo, Texas, was detonated by U.S. explosives experts using a robot, Mexican officials said.
A caller told the emergency operations center in Nuevo Laredo, which is in Tamaulipas state, that six bombs had been planted on the bridge on Saturday, Nuevo Laredo emergency management chief Juan Ernesto Rivera told Efe. Full story HERE
A California truck driver was arrested and his refrigerated truck impounded Monday morning in DeSoto County after a search showed the truck was carrying 460 pounds of marijuana.
Chief Willie Huff, chief law enforcement officer for the Mississippi Department of Transportation, said the truck had pulled in to the weigh station in Nesbit about 7 a.m. Monday.
The truck had a license plate in the front window and the driver’s log was missing several required entries.
“The officer became suspicious of the driver’s actions and the answers to the officer’s questions,” Huff said.
MDOT officials received consent to search the vehicle, loaded with a shipment of celery and chili peppers. Full story HERE
Seven executives and managers at IFCO, a Houston-based pallet company, were charged Friday with conspiring between 2003 and 2006 to harbor illegal immigrants.
In April 2006, immigration agents raided 40 IFCO pallet plants in 26 states and detained 1,182 undocumented workers. Two of the seven officials charged Friday were Spring residents Christopher Tiesman, 40, the senior vice president of finance and accounting; and Kenneth Gines Jr., 51, controller for pallet services.
Tiesman and Gines, along with two other top-level IFCO executives, are charged “in a related conspiracy to defraud the Internal Revenue Service and the Social Security Administration by submitting false payroll-related information to those agencies, and to facilitate the misuse of Social Security numbers by IFCO employees,” said a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Albany, N.Y. WASHINGTON — Ray H. LaHood was sworn in as Secretary of Transportation Friday, just one day after being unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
The ceremony was small, attended by his wife Kathy and son Sam.
Also present were fellow Illinoisan Sen. Richard J. Durbin, assistant majority leader and a small audience of LaHood’s new staff and members of the Department of Transportation transition team. More from The Trucker
The appointment has one of the few bright spots in the new administration. The Trucker article states:
Rep. Byron Dorgan, D.-N.D., made it clear during the committee confirmation hearing Jan. 21 that he expects LaHood, a Republican, to kill the Cross Border Demonstration Project within two months.
Let’s hope LaHood makes good on that projection and kills the Mexican truck pilot program.

Thanks to The Captains America for sharing this with us:
Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Marxists, supporters, et al:
We have stuck together since the late 1950’s, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has run its course. Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right, so let’s just end it on friendly terms. We can smile; slate it up to irreconcilable differences, and go on our own ways.
Here is a model dissolution agreement:
Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement.
After that it should be relatively easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes. We don’t like redistributive
taxes so you can keep them. You are welcome to all the liberal judges and the ACLU.
Since you hate guns and think guns cause crime, we’ll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA, and the military. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore, and Rosie O’Donnell (you are however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to move them).
We’ll keep the capitalism, your hated greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart, and Hollywood.and ANWAR. You can have your beloved homeless, hippies, and illegal aliens. We’ll keep Alaskan Hockey Moms, CEO’s, and Rednecks. We’ll keep the Bibles and you can have ABC,CBS,CNN,NBC, Entertainment Tonight and
You can make nice with Iran, Palestine, and , and we’ll retain the right to invade places that threaten or harm us or our allies. You can have the peaceniks and war protestors. When our allies or way of life are under assault, we’ll provide them job security.
We’ll keep our Judeo-Christian Values. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism, and Shirley McClain. You can keep the U.N., however we will no longer be paying the bill. We’ll keep the SUV’s, pickup trucks, and luxury cars. You can have every Subaru Station Wagon you can find.
You can banter heath care is a right and give it to everyone, if you can find any practicing Doctors like Howard Dean if they’ll donate their time and do it for free.
We’ll continue to believe healthcare insurance is an individual responsibility and more important than spending all of ones money on lifestyle.
We’ll keep The Battle Hymn of the Republic and the National Anthem. I’m sure you’ll be happy to substitute Imagine, I’d Like to Teach The World To Sing, Kum Ba Ya, or We Are the World.
We’ll practice trickle down economics, and you can continue to give trickle up poverty your best shot.
Since it often so offends you, we’ll keep our History, our Name, and our Flag.
Would you agree to this? If so please pass it along to other likeminded patriots, and if you do not agree just hit delete and hang on.
In the spirit of friendly parting, I’ll bet you ANWAR, YOU’LL NEED IT, on who will be crying for whose help in less than four years.
God Bless America!
