Mexico: The Third War

Mexico has pretty much always been a rough-and-tumble place. In recent years, however, the security environment has deteriorated rapidly, and parts of the country have become incredibly violent. It is now common to see military weaponry such as fragmentation grenades and assault rifles used almost daily in attacks.
In fact, just last week we noted two separate strings of grenade attacks directed against police in Durango and Michoacan states. In the Michoacan incident, police in Uruapan and Lazaro Cardenas were targeted by three grenade attacks during a 12-hour period. Then on Feb. 17, a major firefight occurred just across the border from the United States in Reynosa, when Mexican authorities attempted to apprehend several armed men seen riding in a vehicle. The men fled to a nearby residence and engaged the pursuing police with gunfire, hand grenades and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). After the incident, in which five cartel gunmen were killed and several gunmen, cops, soldiers and civilians were wounded, authorities recovered a 60 mm mortar, five RPG rounds and two fragmentation grenades. High-Profile Inmate Expected To Be Released From Columbiana County Prison
COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio — An El Paso, Texas border patrol agent who has been jail for an unwarranted shooting in 2005 could be released from prison Tuesday, despite an 11-year center.
Jose Compean is one of two people jailed in connection with the shooting that prosecutors said the two agents tried to cover up. While the second agent, Ignacio Ramos, awaits release in Phoenix Tuesday, Compean could also be released Tuesday from a federal prison in Elkton, Columbiana County. More HERE

FBI search linked to synagogue vandalism
FBI agents executed a search warrant at a North Side residence this morning, marking a possible break in the investigation into last month’s vandalism at synagogues and Jewish schools on the North Side and in Lincolnwood.
Agents searched a home at 6029 N. Artesian Ave. about 7:30 a.m., according to FBI spokeswoman Cynthia Yates.
The warrant was executed as part of an ongoing investigation. More from the Southtown Star

KBR wins more Iraq work
KBR Inc. has been awarded a $35.4 million contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for design and construction of a convoy support center at Camp Adder in Iraq.
Houston-based KBR (NYSE: KBR) will build a power plant, electrical distribution center, water purification and distribution system and other infrastructure, including paved roads.
The work by the engineering and construction services company is expected to begin in February. From the Houston Business Journal

Bomb Detonated on US-Mexico Border Bridge
NUEVO LAREDO, MEXICO — A bomb found on the Puerta a las Americas, one of the four international bridges linking this Mexican city to Laredo, Texas, was detonated by U.S. explosives experts using a robot, Mexican officials said.
A caller told the emergency operations center in Nuevo Laredo, which is in Tamaulipas state, that six bombs had been planted on the bridge on Saturday, Nuevo Laredo emergency management chief Juan Ernesto Rivera told Efe. Full story HERE
