Tree-living fungus that manufactures diesel could be new source of green energy

A tree-living fungus that manufactures diesel fuel has been discovered in South America.

Experts believe the organism, Gliocladium roseum, could potentially be a completely new source of green energy.

The fungus, which lives inside the Ulmo tree in the Patagonian rainforest, naturally produces hydrocarbon fuel similar to the diesel used in cars and trucks.

Scientists were amazed to find that it was able to convert plant cellulose directly into the biofuel, dubbed ‘myco-diesel’.  More from The Daily Mail

Obama to kill coal? Swing states erupt

Sen. John McCain’s Republican campaign is looking to capitalize on an interview in which Sen. Barack Obama proposed placing such heavy government fees on coal plants that the industry would either have to clean its emissions or go “bankrupt.”

“If somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can,” Obama said in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle. “It’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.”

Publicity over the plan to use “carbon credits” to force the coal industry to either clean up its emissions or get out of business comes on the heels of news that Obama plans to use “price signals” to control America’s energy use, and Republicans have pounced on Obama’s words with an aggressive campaign in the coal-rich battleground states of Ohio and Pennsylvania.  More from WorldNetDaily
