In a recent article posted at truthout.org, Phillip Butler makes a case for the arrest of George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld for crimes against the U.S. Constitution. Butler is a veteran military pilot and was a POW in Vietnam for 2,855 days. Since his repatriation in 1973, he has earned a PhD in Sociology and according to his author bio, “he mentors business and organization leaders and is a community activist.”
His article is well-written and thorough, using the Third Geneva Convention and its rules regarding the interrogation of POWs as the basis for his assertions. In the article, Butler accuses the Bush Administration of “gross attempts to institutionalize torture.” In addition to being well-written, the article is also gravely out of step with the times.
Article 17 of the Third Geneva Convention states:
“No physical or mental torture, nor any other form of coercion may be inflicted on prisoners of war to secure from them information of any kind whatever. Prisoners of war who refuse to answer may not be threatened, insulted, or exposed to any unpleasant or disadvantageous treatment of any kind.”
In a war between two legitimate nations, each with a well-organized and identifiable military, this is an acceptable practice. Unfortunately, such is not the case in the war being waged against the free world by Islamic fundamentalists.

Three weeks after the U.S. presidential election, we are getting the first signs of how President-elect Barack Obama will govern. That now goes well beyond the question of what is conventionally considered U.S. foreign policy — and thus beyond Stratfor’s domain. At this moment in history, however, in the face of the global financial crisis, U.S. domestic policy is intimately bound to foreign policy. How the United States deals with its own internal financial and economic problems will directly affect the rest of the world.
One thing the financial crisis has demonstrated is that the world is very much America-centric, in fact and not just in theory. When the United States runs into trouble, so does the rest of the globe. It follows then that the U.S. response to the problem affects the rest of the world as well. Therefore, Obama’s plans are in many ways more important to countries around the world than whatever their own governments might be planning.

By George Friedman — From Stratfor.com
Barack Obama has been elected president of the United States by a large majority in the Electoral College. The Democrats have dramatically increased their control of Congress, increasing the number of seats they hold in the House of Representatives and moving close to the point where — with a few Republican defections — they can have filibuster-proof control of the Senate. Given the age of some Supreme Court justices, Obama might well have the opportunity to appoint at least one and possibly two new justices. He will begin as one of the most powerful presidents in a long while.
Truly extraordinary were the celebrations held around the world upon Obama’s victory. They affirm the global expectations Obama has raised — and reveal that the United States must be more important to Europeans than the latter like to admit. (We can’t imagine late-night vigils in the United States over a French election.) Continue reading →

Why did so many Republicans vote for a socialist bailout bill that goes against everything Republicans have always stood for? More to the point, why did President Bush push this bill so hard and even refuse to consider any alternatives, such as bankruptcy or the alternate private sector market solution proposed by House Republicans?
Despite what the Democrats and their media have been trying to put over on the public, and in spite of a number of major threats to our country and the free market, the economy has been in relatively good condition throughout the Bush administration until now. Granted, President Bush’s methods of keeping the economy out of recession have driven up the national debt and served to keep an artificial bubble inflated, but the economy has stayed strong, up until now.
Is it really any coincidence that economic troubles always seem to pop up in an election year when a Republican president inhabits the White House? And each time, Democrats make the same claim; that it’s all the president’s fault and the answer is more socialism in America. It’s interesting to note however, that when you look below the surface, you usually find Democrats at the heart of the economic problem. Continue reading →
